Juan Juarez

My name is Juan Manuel Juarez (He/Him) and I am a Oaxacan, Zapotec lighting designer and theatre technician based in the Baltimore-Washington area.  Growing up in San Diego in a predominantly Latine community, I was able to embrace my Mexican heritage while quickly adapting to American ways.

My personal approach to design is centered around telling narratives from different points of view. By infusing my cultural background and personal experiences into my work, I am able to create meaningful connections between people, their environment, and their stories.  My work is meant to evoke emotion,  to inspire those who experience it, and to bridge the gap between different cultures and communities.

My creative home is currently Everyman Theatre, in Baltimore, MD, where I've been the Lighting Supervisor since 2015.  Everyman has been instrumental in shaping my work ethic and taught me to work efficiently in a collaborative environment.  I hold degrees in Theatre Production and Psychology from Hofstra University.

I have a passion for cultivating art that makes an impact. As an immigrant, queer, Latine artist, I am grateful for the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped me. Whether I'm exploring other cultures or diving deeper into my own  I strive to share the stories and experiences that have shaped me, while also shedding light on issues that affect our global community. I am eager to contribute to building a more just and equitable future in our field. At Everyman Theatre, I am a member of the Committee on Anti-Racism, Equity and Solidarity. I am a member of the US Institute for Theatre Technology Terminology Working Group to eliminate problematic language in the theatre industry.
