Morning Music for eight cellos
for Cellovoce
I was commissioned by Thomasz Zieba, director of the Cellovoce ensemble, in 2011 to write Morning Music. He wanted to bring something of Oklahoma with the group on their trip to the European Musical Workshops in Kolobrzeg, Poland.
Program Note
This piece for eight cellos aims to capture a moment of the morning out of the still-dark sky. The melodic material is limited to a simple folk-like tune presented in fragments, sometimes evolving from the texture and sometimes buried within, while the formal sections of the piece reflect the slow and then sudden transformations of the Oklahoma morning.
